Materials:
pencils scissors glue paper TV or projector Animal Chart (powerpoint) Adaptations (powerpoint) Owl, Spider, Cat (powerpoint -last slide) Animal Changes (Word)
Resources:
"Spiders are not Insects" by Allan Fowler "Cats" by Gail Gibbons Either "Owls" by JoAnn Macken or Julie Murray "Cock-a-Doodle Moooooo!" by Keith DuQuette
Procedure:
Day 1: 1. Read "Spiders are not Insects" to class and fill out spider column as you go along. 2. Repeat for cat and owl books.
Day 2: 1. Read "Cock-a-doodle Moooo!" talk about the combing of two animals 2. Show adaptations powerpoint - discuss the names and the two animals that have been mixed and how that animal's life would change - climate, food, movement, etc. 3. Give students page with all three animals on it. Tell them they will be combining two of the animals to make a new animal (taking head and body of one and appendages of another). As a class come up with the name of the 3 new animals and write on the board. ex: cat + owl = cowl. 4. Have students choose the head and body of one animal, cut out and glue to paper (I had them glue to the back of the writing paper, but if you wanted to display, you would glue to a separate piece) 5. Then choose the appandages of a different animal, cut and glue onto the body and head of the other 6. Have students write about how that new animal's life would change and or stay the same.. ex: body of owl, legs of spider is a spowl. The spowl has to crawl now instead of fly. It can still lay egss and "Hoo" but it can not spin a web.
