Procedure:
The following library activity was done in a whole group setting.
Day 1- Read the story of Galdones , The Gingerbread Boy and after reading the story aloud discuss the text with the students. Point out the various characters and their roles in the story. Discuss important story elements such as the setting and plot. Make a list of the students comments.
Day 2- Read aloud the story of The Runaway Tortilla. Discuss the various characters and their roles in within the story. Have the students point out story details, and tell the students to be thinking about how the story is similar to the Gingerbread Boy. Make a list of their comments. Point out the meaning of the words different and similar. Talk about how the two stories are different.
Day 3- Using the computer and cd Inspiration template explain to the students that as a classroom they will now be creating a literary comparison chart. The librarian will enter each student idea into the appropriate symbol. Carefully review vocabulary of what is similar and what is different. Complete the template in large group activity.
