Procedure:
After listening to several classic Dr. Seuss book and taking a picture walk of the illustrations students will note similarities and differences between the stories. Lead a discussion of why the wacky and fanciful illustrations add to the stories and how different they would be, if he had chosen a different way of illustrating them. Students will then create their own illustrations using KidPix software for a Seussville Wall Mural (used as a focal point for our Read Across America Celebration). Using the district technology standards as a guide, highlight the following features of KidPix; 1. Instead of allowing students to use KidPix desktop shortcut, have students use START-PROGRAMS NETWORK APPS FOLDER to access software application. 2. From the color splotch at the bottom left of the screen, use the color picker to choose a color. 3. Using the Draw Tools click the Unfilled Polygon Shape. Remind them the houses should not be perfectly straight and normal looking. We want odd, unique looking creations. Draw the sides of the house, clicking after each line drawn. Remind students that it is very important to finish your polygon by re-clicking on the starting point. This enables them to choose another tool easily. 4. Using the Fill paintbucket tool, students can fill in their polygon with either a solid, pattern or blend. Direct them to the undo man to show how they can experiment with their house until they find the most interesting effect. 5. Go to paint tool, be sure they are on the Wacky Mode. Here they will find doors, window and different bricks to form chimneys for their who-houses. 6. Students can print their house using the file menu. Choose full page. 7. Students will clear their screen using the firecracker to undo their outrageous creations.
