Materials:
Diagram of Bus (posterboard), Pencil Writing Activity Sheet

Resources:
A Picture Book of Rosa Parks by David A. Adler Freedom Walkers: The Story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott by Russell Freedom (I used this book to show the class some pictures)

Procedure:
Day 1 1. Begin by discussing Black History Month, the month we celebrate the contributions of African Americans in history. Invite the students to share what they know about Martin Luther King. Ask them to share the goals he had for America. Review and explain vocabulary words: discriminate and segregate.

2.Read aloud A Picture Book of Rosa Parks by David A. Adler (or another book of your choice about Rosa Parks).

3. After reading, show students a diagram of a bus. See the link. I put this diagram of the bus on a large poster. You could have the students color this activity themselves if you want. Another option is to make an overhead. Using different markers you color in where the bus driver sat, were Rosa Parks sat, the white people and African Americans.

Day 2 (or still day 1, if you have the time) 1. Review the previous Rosa Parks lesson, perhaps reading another book. Have students tell in their own words what happened. 2. Have students provide words that describe Rosa Parks-make a word bank. Brave, scared, determined, persevered, hard-working, tired, angry 3. Provide students with the Bus Writing Activity. Have them write one sentence (or more if they can) about Rosa Parks.
