Resources:
I can read with my eyes shut by Dr. Suess
Graph Club
Procedure:
Day One:
1. Read "I can read with my eyes shut" by Dr. Suess to whole group, encouraging students to guess the rhyming words.
2. "The cat found words in all sorts of places, where can you find words and letters around you?" "Where could you find words and letters in the library?"
3. Give each student a crayon and a graph sheet for their letter.
4. Explain process.
Process:
1. The children will walk quietly around the room looking for their letter on signs, books, etc. Every time the child finds the letter, a box is colored in on the graph sheet.
2. After about 5 minutes children are called back to the carpent area and materials are collected with the promise of using the information they gathered for a special project on their next library visit.
Day Two:
1. Pass out the graph sheets and ask the students to count the number of boxes they colored. Have them write the number on their paper.
2. Using Graph club, create a bar graph showing how many times each letter was found.
3. Discuss the differences in the letters. i.e. "Why do you think the letter "q" was only found 1 time, but the letter "a" was found 14 times?"
