| Cubes and Volume |
Grade: Fifth |
Content Area: Technology |
Time Frame: 2 lessons (90 minutes) |
Unit/Lesson Overview: This lesson is designed to introduce students to the concept of volume. Students will work with three different interactive websites to manipulate cubes to enhance understanding of volume.

I Can.... ...find the volume of a cube given the length, width and height of that cube....explain what the surface area of a figure is. ...draw a figure with a certain volume. |
Assessment(s): Did students use the applets correctly? Can students talk about how to find volume of a figure? Did students complete the worksheet with reasonable understanding?: |

Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Ask students if they recall how to find the area of a two-dimensional shape, such as a square. Have a discussion on volume of three-dimentional figures. |
Lesson: Step 1: Download the website Surface Area and Volume to the student server.Step 2: Show students how to choose between a triangular prism and a rectangular prism, and how to manipulate the scroll bar to adjust the length, width, and height of the prisms. Show them the place where the surface area and volume of the figures is displayed. Step 3: Pass out the worksheet to accompany the applet. Step 4: Walk students through question 1 on the worksheet--make sure they understand the slider bars for controlling size. Step 5: Allow students to work in small groups on the rest of the worksheet, and then have them repeat the worksheet for the triangular prism. Talk about how finding each answer on the sheet changes from the rectangle to the triangle.
Reteach: To be determined by teacher based on student needs
Extension: Download and save the Cubes and the Isometric Drawing Tools website to the student server. Have students open the Cubes site and show them how to manipulate the sides of the cube. Have students open the Isometric Drawing Tools website and show them how to use the different tools to draw the cubes and measure the volume of each cube. Give students volume problems for them to represent with the isometric drawing tools.
Guiding Questions: Can you create the cube showing the dimensions that you are given?Do you see a pattern with the height, width and depth when you enlarge or minimize the figure?
Summary Questions: Can you describe what surface area is?Can you tell how to find the volume of a figure?
Reflection: Even though surface area isn't in fifth grade scope and sequence, it is used well within this lesson to enhance students' understanding.
