Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Review previous graphs that you have created in class and discuss why graphing information can be helpful.
Make a list of the 4 pets used in the graphing activity (dog, bird, cat, and fish). Ask the students which is their favorite.
Have the students record their data on the data form.(File 2)

Lesson: Step 1: Save the Kinder Graph template (File 1) to the Student Shared directory.
Step 2: Navigate to the place you saved the template. Right click on the file, choose properties, and click in the box next to read only.
Step3: Have the students open the Kinder Graph template (file 1).
Step 4: Click on the tab that says Animals.
Step 5: Discuss the labels for each of the columns on the graph and show the students how to drag the pictures to the proper column.
Step 6: Students refer to their data sheets to drag the correct number of animals to the graph.
Step 7: Have the students count the total number of animals in each column and write the number below the animal name. (When the students do this 3 different graphs will automatically be created on the extra tabs on the worksheet.)
Step 8: Click on the Questions tab at the bottom and discuss the questions with the students.
Step 9: Click on the different graph tabs to show the students how the same information can be represented with different types of graphs. (bar, line, etc.)
Step 10: If time allows, have the students work on the extension activity.

Reteach: To be determined by the teacher based on the student needs

Extension: Have students click on the Number Sentences tab and create number sentences combining the results of their data. For example, how many birds and cats were chosen?
Have the students click on the pictures and drag them into the empty box. Then have the students type a number sentence in the yellow box below.

Guiding Questions: What would happen to the graph if we had more pets to choose from?
How can we collect our data? How else can we collect our data?

How do we know which animal was chosen the most/least?
Which type of graph (line, bar, or picture) is the easiest for you to understand? Why?
