Lesson 1:
Step 1: Prior to the class, download classheight.xls (file 1), and save it to your directory. Open the file and type in your students' names in the first column. Add the students' team numbers or names in the second column.
Step 2: Review inches and centimeters as units of length. Have each team predict which team will be the tallest.
Step 3: Have each student measure others on their team. Two sets of measurements should be recorded for each child, height in inches, height in centimeters. After the measurements are taken, students should go to the teacher computer and enter their results on the classheight Excel file (file 1).
Step 4: Go to the computer lab and display the class results on the large screen. Introduce how to make a number line in Kid Pix Deluxe 3. A sample for your use is height.kpx (file 2).
Step 5: Each child should prepare a Kid Pix number line with points on the line representing only their team. Assign which teams should display inches and which should use centimeters.
Lesson 2:
Step 1: Teacher will place a copy of the completed classheight Excel file on the student shared directory.
Step 2: Students will open the classheight Excel file. Using the tools available within Excel(AutoSum) or a calculator, students should determine team heights and compare their results with their teammates.
Step 3: Lead the students through the steps to complete a graph displaying either individual heights or team heights.
