Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Introduce students to the vocabulary found in their nonfiction text. This information will help them when they are trying to guess the covered word.
Introduce or review the concept of checking for meaning and looking at letters to determine unknown words. Discuss how the strategies used in the activity can transfer to their reading. |
Lesson: Step 1: Right click on the PowerPoint template (File 1 or File 2) and choose Save Target As.(P>)
Step 2: Save the template to your computer or the server. The directions for making changes to the slides are found within the PowerPoint template.
Step 3: Open the template and type in text that applies to your social studies or science text. Move the boxes to cover the vocabulary words you want the students to try to decode.
Step 4: Save the presentation, being careful to rename it so you do not save over your template.
Step 5: During the "Working With Words" block in your classroom, open the PowerPoint presentation using your multimedia computer and TV. (You will use the View Show setting for this activity.)
Step 6: Right click on the slide that contains the covered words.(On the examples, it is slide 2)Choose the option speaker notes. Now you can type student guesses in the box. Be careful not to click on the slide until you are ready to uncover the onset or rime.
Step 7: Have students read the paragraph using "blank" where words are covered up. Go back to sentence 1 and have the students guess the covered word. Record the guesses in the speaker notes box. After 5 guesses, uncover the onset by clicking one time on the box covering the onset. Eliminate words in the speaker notes box that wouldn't work because of the onset. Let students make 5 more suggestions. Uncover the rest of the word.
Step 8: Continue to record student guesses until all words are uncovered.

Extension: After modeling this lesson, have students work in partners at a center.
Have students use the covered word template to create a paragraph of their own.
|

Does that make sense in the paragraph?
Explain how you guessed the word that was covered.
|
Summary Questions: How can this activity help you with your reading?
What were you thinking when you read the "blank" in the sentence? How did you come up with your guess?
