Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Begin by reading I Love You, Little One by Nancy Tafuri or Rush Hour by Christine Loomis calling attention to words in the text that have two or more syllables. Next, begin reviewing syllables and clapping words while distinguishing the syllables. Suggested Language: "You are really good at clapping the syllables in words. Let's try a few words now." Demonstrate with words such as apple, jumping, bicycle, and caterpillar. |
Lesson: Step 1: Save Blending Syllables PowerPoint template (file 1) on the Student Shared drive.Step 2: Tell your students, "Today we are going to play a game with syllables or parts of words." Step 3: Have students open the template (file 1) and look at slide 1. Explain to the students how to put their name in the text box on slide 1 and move to the next slide. Step 4: Explain to the students that they are going to look at the pictures on the side of the slide and find a picture that has 1 syllable and drag it over to the slide. Model for the students how to place their mouse on a corner of the picture. When they have the cross arrows they can click and drag the object to the slide. TIP-Share the Undo arrow to show how students can undo the last action if they make a mistake. Step 5: Have the students find the other picture with one syllable and drag it to the slide. Step 6: Model with the students how to change to different slides and allow them to finish slides 3-6 while you monitor their progress. Step 7: As students finish their work, have them go to File/Print, choose Print\Handouts and select 6 to a page, so that they can create a mini book. Use Making Minibook Word document (file 2) for directions.
