Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Watch the "Pennies, Nickles, Dimes, Quarters, and Dollars" segment from the KLRN Streaming Video.
Lead a brief discussion on a time when the children wanted to purchase something, and how they knew how much to pay for the item. |
Lesson: Lesson 1:
Step 1: Prior to the class, download the KLRN Streaming Video segment, and the two Kidspiration 2 Activity files (file 1 and file 2). Save the Kidspiration files to your student shared drive.
Step 2: Prior to going to the lab, demonstrate on your multimedia computer how to drag coins from the area on the left to the colored boxes. Students will be demonstrating three ways to purchase a slice of pizza that costs 96¢.
Step 3: In the lab, have children complete their pizza1 activity (file 1). When they have finished, trade seats with a partner and check each other's work. Return to original seats and save the file in their student drive. Print the files out for class review and discussion. Students can write in their math journal responding to guiding or summary questions.
Lesson 2:
Step 1: In the second part of this lesson, children will open the coins Kidspiration activity (file 2). They will then select an item for others to purchase and place the item on the top left of their sheet. They also need to select a price for the item (under $1.00).
Step 2: Students will then exchange computers with a partner and demonstrate one way to "purchase" the other student's item with coins.
Step 3: Students will continue to exchange seats until all three areas are completed. Step 4: Have students return to their original computer and save the file on their student drive.

Reteach: For reteach or tutoring purposes: Riverdeep Destination Math Course I (K-1), Module 3, Unit 1, Session 4 (Money).

Extension: Post the printouts of the student-selected items ("coins" project). Have the children write a wish list of items they would like to purchase.
In their math journals or in a Word document, have them add the prices and determine total coins needed. You can also have them use calculators to check their totals.
