Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): To introduce the concept of the a Semantic Feature Analysis Matrix, have the students brainstorm 3 different sports. List the vocabulary for sports along the left side of the Semantic Feature Analysis Excel template (file 1). Have students brainstorm features of sports in general. List the features of the topic Sports along the top of the Semantic Feature Analysis. As a class, use the drop down menu in each cell to complete the matrix. Choose a + if the sport contains that feature; choose a - if the sport DOES NOT contain that feature. Discuss as a whole class what can be learned from organizing and analyzing vocabulary words in this manner.
Lesson: Step 1: Give the students a theme or topic to choose vocabulary words from.Step 2: Groups of students will list vocabulary words related to the theme or concept on the left side of the Semantic Feature Analysis Matrix (file 1). Step 3:Groups will identify features of the words from step 1 and list features along the top row of the Semantic Feature Analysis Matrix. Step 4:Groups will click in each cell of the matrix and use the drop down menu to choose a + if the feature describes the word, or a - if the feature DOES NOT describe the word. Step 5: Groups will analyze the matrix to gain a deeper understanding of the vocabulary included.

Reteach: To be determined by teacher based on student needs
Extension: Students can use the information gained from the Semantic Feature Analysis to create an original work. For example, if the topic were Fairy Tales, the vocabulary down the left side could be various Fairy Tale titles. Across the top features of Fariy Tales would be listed. Students will use the information gained from completing the matrix to determine key elements of a fairy tale, and then include those key elements when writing an original fairy tale of their own.
Guiding Questions: What connections can you make among the words in the left column of the Semantic Feature Analysis? What ideas might you add to the features being analyzed?
Summary Questions: How does this information help you better understand the overall concept you are studying? How can you use this tool to deepen your understanding of other concepts?
