Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Using the multimedia computer and television, project the Using Words PowerPoint template (file 1) to introduce this lesson. Have students gather around so all can see. Step 1: Pull the letters "i" and "s" onto the slide and show them that if they know the word is, it will help them know another word. Make his on the It Helps You Know side and have the students read it. Step 2: Pull out the letters "a" and "t" and show them that if they know the word at, it will help them know another word. Make cat on the It Helps You Know side and have the students read it. Step 3: Repeat steps 1-2 multiple times with other word patterns. |
Lesson: Step 1: Save the Using Words PowerPoint template (file 1) on the student shared drive.
Step 2: Have the children work in pairs at the computer.
Step 3: Using the letters on slide 2, the first child makes a word he/she knows on the left side of the If You Know sheet. (Be sure to model four cross arrows in order to click and drag the letters.)
Step 4: The partner changes one thing about the word and makes a new word on the right side of the slide.
Step 5: The first child then reads her partner's word.
Step 6: After making 6 pairs of words, have the children choose one pair and write the first word on one side of an index card and the related word on the other side.
Step 7: Share index card(s) with the class.
