Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Read Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge by Mem Fox.
Write down the five definitions of a memory that assisted in helping find Miss Nancy's memory (something warm, something from long ago, something that makes you cry, something that makes you laugh and something as precious as gold).
Discuss the objects Wilfrid brings to represent each memory. Have a discussion about the importance of memories to people of all ages.
|
Lesson: Lesson 1:
Step 1: Save the Kidspiration template (file 2) to the student share folder for students to access.
Step 2 : Students will open the template in Writing View.
Step 3 : Using the list from the warm-up activity, students will brainstorm items they think of when they use Wilfrid's definition of a memory. Explain to students the items need to be things they can bring in to be scanned. If their list includes a large item, they will need to take a picture of the item or draw it.
Step 4: Students will print their page and be responsible for collecting the items either at home or at school. (See the parent letter in file 1.)
Lesson 2:
Step 1: Lay a piece of plexiglass or glass on the scanner to protect it from scratches. (The glass from an 8x10 frame works very well.)
Step 2 : Have students, one at a time, place the items they brought in on the plexiglass.
Step 3 : After items are placed on the scanner, cover the items with a piece of cloth. This provides a background so the lid doesn't have to close. (Be sure to remove the cloth after scanning so the scanner doesn't overheat.) For directions on using the scanner see File 1.
Step 4: The student can then press the Scan button on the front of the scanner.
Step 5: The students will print their collage by choosing Scan: Print or they can choose Scan to and choose a program from the dropdown list (ex. Word).
Step 6: Have the students write a paragraph explaining what each item in the collage represents or students can present their ideas orally.
