| Procedures |
Introductory Activity (Warm-Up):
Create a shortcut or a hotlist to the Synonym Matching Game. (See link above) As a whole class, or in small groups, have the students play the game to become familiar with Synonyms. Have them discuss the synonyms as they play. |
Lesson:
Save the Kidspiration Synonym Template (File 1) to the Student Server. Mark the template as Read Only. In the lab, or as a center, have students navigate to the server, open the template, and complete the activity following the directions. They should complete the organizer in Picture View, and then create sentences in Writing View.

Reteach:
Save the Synonyms Reteach template (File 2) to the student server. Mark it as Read Only. Pair students up for support. Have them complete the Synonyms reteach activity together.

Extension:
Open a new Kidspiration Picture. Give students a common word. Have them type the word in the center symbol. Have them create new symbols off of the original word. Have them then type a synonym for the center word in each new symbol.

What can you conclude about synonyms? How can your choice of words influence the reader?

How will understanding synonyms help you become a better writer? How are you going to apply your new learning in the Writing Block this week?
