Day 1
Step 1: Introduce the book, Soil. Point out text features such as the Table of Contents, Chapter Headings, Captions, Vocabulary section and Index.
Step 2: Have students discuss what type of text you are preparing to read. (informational text or nonfiction)
Step 3: Read each chapter (or you can stop at smaller segments) and have students "Say Something". Students will turn to a partner and recall an interesting point that was just shared.
Step 4: Go back into the Rivet template (file 1). Go to the last two slides with all words. Have students help to define the words as they appeared in the text.
Step 5: As a class, open the Expository Text Pyramid (file 2). Fill in each step of the pyramid as a class.
Day 2:
Step 1: Choose another type of informational text (see resources or web link).
Step 2: Have students divide into groups of 3.
Step 3: Students should look at the text features of the book, article or passage. Are there captions? Did the author include definitions?
Step 4: Have students take turns reading the text. Have students stop and "Say Something" to each other as they read.
Step 5: Have students open up the Expository Pyramid template (file 2). Using knowledge from the previous day lesson and current text, have students fill in the expository text pyramid.
Step 6: Have students print pages and share with the class. Have students compare information they found important with the group.
Literacy Work Station Idea: Now that the Expository Pyramid (file 2) has been done as a whole group and with partners, consider placing it in a literacy work station for students to complete.
