Supplementary Resources / Materials: This activity can be used with any expository texts. Good sources for expository texts include the library portal, classroom magazines, and content textbooks.

| Procedures |
Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Show the section named Heredity (5:26 minutes) and/or the section named Behavior (5:37 minutes)of the KLRN streaming video entitled TLC Elementary School: Life Cycles to build background knowledge about the expository text they will be reading during the lesson. |
Lesson: Step 1: Together, in partners, or independently, have the students read the article entitled Scientists Map Genetic Code For Humans.
Step 2: Open the Excel Workbook entitled Expository Text Retell (file 1).
Step 3: As a class, complete the sheet entitled Text Title by answering the questions in the box to the right of the question.
Step 4: Right click on the tab at the bottom of the sheet and choose RENAME. Type a keyword that represents the article as the title of that sheet.
Step 5: Save the Excel Workbook on the student server. Step 6: Have the students open the Workbook and save it to their personal directory. Step 7: Explain to the students that there are 9 remaining sheets in this Excel Workbook, as well as a template sheet that can be used to make additional sheets. They will be completing the remainder of the sheets individually or in groups throughout the year in workstations with other pieces of expository texts.

Extension: Use the article entitled Where Did it Come From? (internet link 2) in a learning station and have the students use their saved Excel Workbook to complete a retelling of this article.

Guiding Questions: Why do you think expository text is usually written in a different format than narrative text?What would be an author's purpose for writing a piece of expository text? Do genes determine inherited traits, learned traits, or both?
