Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Bring in a picture of your family during a holiday or celebration. Give examples of traditions, rules or customs found in your family. Have students share some of their family traditions. Read Eleanor, Ellatony, Ellencake and Me. Have students share any nicknames that are in their family. Introduce the word Traditions. |
Lesson: Day 1:
Step 1: After dicussing family traditions, rules and customs, have students open Family Traditions 1 (file 1).
Step 2: Let students fill in the web with their own family traditions, rules or customs. Print webs to use for Day 2 activities.
Day 2:
Step 1: Review discussion of family traditions from Day 1.
Step 2: Show students the book cover for "Raising Yoder's Barn".
Step 3: Ask students to make predictions about the book based on discussions about customs and traditions.
Step 4: Read "Raising Yoder's Barn" Stop throughout the book to ask questions about what customs and traditions the students are observing about the Amish.
Step 5: Using the multimedia computer or projector, open Kidspiration. Open the Venn Diagram template that is located under "activities; more". Have students help fill in the diagram comparing the traditions in the book with traditions within their families. (use of electricity, technology, cars, etc.)
Step 6: Have students work with a partner to compare their Kidspiration web from Day 1. Students can then open the Venn Diagram template and fill it in comparing/ contrasting their traditions with their partner. (This can also be done as a literacy center)
Step 7: Have students discuss what they have learned about their family traditions, as well as others in the class.

Reteach: To be determined by teacher based on student needs

Extension: Place the book Eleanor, Ellatony, Ellencake and Me in a literacy center. Have students look through the book to find the rhyming words. Open the template Eleanor, Ellatony, Ellencake and Me1(file 2). Have students work in pairs to organize the rhyming words and add one or two of their own.

What are some examples of traditions in the books we have read?
Why do you think traditions are so important?

Summary Questions: Which, if any, of the Amish traditions would you like to have as your own? Why?
Would it be better if we had some of the same traditions as observed in the stories? Why or Why not?
What would happen if we didn't have family customs or traditions?
