Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Practice graphic organizer for pre-writing |
Lesson: Read "Eleven" by Sandra Cisneros
Discuss comprehension and analysis questions. Talk about her distinct Voice.
Create a graphic organizer brainstorming ideas on the topic of your best/worst birthday memory using the computer program Inspiration.
From the graphic organizer, create a composition on the topic of your best/worst birthday memory. During the lesson, Voice should be stressed. Read several different pieces of work in the same genre as Sandra Cisneros and ask students to try and identify the author. Discuss the fact that some authors sound different when they write and you can sometimes tell who the author is just by the way they write. Students can take the idea that they choose from the brainstorm and begin to outline that idea in Inspiration using the Outline view. Adding supporting details and notes the students can begin to work through their paper. If there is time, students can either type on Alphasmarts or export paper to Word and begin to compose from there. Once the papers are typed in the computer, incorporate peer revising to see if Voice is a part of the paper. Use attached rubric.
