Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Before the lesson, save the Get the Gist Kidspiration template (file 1 for English, file 2 for Spanish) to the student server. Mark the file as Read Only.Give the students the topic of the passage and complete the K and W portion of a KWL on chart paper or in Kidspiration. Explain the Get the Gist template in Kidspiration (file 1 for English, file 2 for Spanish) |
Lesson: 1. Have the students (individually or in groups) read the passage, one paragraph at a time.2. After each paragraph, have them write a main idea statement in 10 words or less in the Kidspiration template. 3. Have the students follow this pattern for the entire passage. 4. When they have created a main idea statement for each paragraph, have them click the Publish button in Kidspiration (the button with the green arrow pointing to a sheet of paper). 5. Their statements will be transferred to Word. Once in Word, the students should combine sentences and add transition words to create a summary of the passage.

Extension: Students can present their summary to the whole group.The whole group can discuss what makes a good summary.
