Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): As a whole class, give the students a topic, such as sports, music, holidays, etc.Brainstorm words that relate to the topic you have given them. |
Lesson: Divide the students into groups and number the groups 1-4.Have each group choose one word from the brainstormed list. Have the groups open the Riming Relay Excel Document (file 1). Have each group go to the appropriate sheet in the document. Set the timer to a determined time and have the students begin to type in as many words as they can think of with the same rime. When the timer goes off, have all groups save. Have groups, one at a time, come to the front and present their list to the class. Students can argue the validity of words. After all have presented, the team with the most valid rimes wins!
Reteach: To be determined by teacher based on student needs
Extension: Allow students to make rimes (same spelling pattern, ie. mine, line) and rhymes (same sound, not same spelling pattern, ie. mine, sign). Assign two points for each rime and one point for each rhyme.
Guiding Questions: Can you come up with multi-syllabic words with the same rime? When words sound the same, can we assume they use the same spelling pattern?
Summary Questions: What do you notice about your list? How did you come up with your words? What can we learn from these patterns in words? How can we use what we learned to help us in our reading and writing?
