Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Work through a story problem with the students in the classroom. Demonstrate how to draw the problem out and write a corresponding number sentence. |
Lesson: Have the students open the "Story Problems" PowerPoint template (file 1).
Work through the first two slides with the students. You will see that there are more pictures than the students need in the picture bank. Click by the * to type your number sentence. Demonstrate how to use the pencil on the drawing toolbar to group pictures.
Have the students solve the problems on slides 3, 4, and 5.

Extension: Using PowerPoint slides 6 and 7, have the students create and solve their own story problem.

Guiding Questions: If I am adding dogs, do I gain or lose dogs?
If I am unable to draw a picture of a horse, how else could I represent a horse?
