Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Before going to the lab, use a multimedia computer to show the students how they can create a patio and a perimeter around it using the Excel paint bucket. Discuss the Area and Perimeter of the patio that you create. |
Lesson: Before taking the students to the lab, delete any worksheets from the Tiling a Patio Excel template (file 1) that you don't want the students to see and save it in the Student directory as a read-only document.Open the Tiling a Patio Excel template (file 1) and click on the Tiling a Patio worksheet.
Have the students read the problem and begin creating the patios.
Students click on the Questions worksheet and type their answers.
Have the students create a table and graph for the information they have collected. Use the Create an Excel Graph Excel template (file 2) to help you create a graph.
|
Reteach: To be determined by the teacher based on student needs
|
Extension: Have the students insert a new Worksheet and create their own patios independently or in small groups.
Students should then create a table and graph for the information they collect about the patios they create.
|
Guiding Questions: Is there a relationship between the number of tiles used to create the patio and the number of tiles used for the perimeter?
Does the number of tiles used for the patio ever exceed the number of tiles used for the perimeter of the patio?
|
Summary Questions: Were you able to find a pattern?
Would that same pattern work if the patios were not square? Why or Why not?
