Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Using the link in the Internet links section, the teacher will read 5 "W" poems written by other students.
The teacher and students will discuss the 5 "W" poetry outline:
Who?
What?
When?
Where?
Why?
Using board or chart paper, the teacher selects a focus (content information, fall, holiday, etc.). Students will brainstorm items that fit into each appropriate category (who, what, when, etc..). See Fall 5 W Poem Word template (file 2) for an example. |
Lesson: Students will go to their computer and open up Microsoft Word.
On the top line students will type "5 W Poem" and their name.
Show students how to click on File/Save as and save to their personal folder (it will automatically save it as the title the student typed).
Students will then choose a "why" from the list generated (or choose one of their own) and type it on the first line.
The students will then complete the rest of the poem following the same structure.
Students will save and print.
**If time permits show students how to insert clipart.
If using in a cooperative group setting (using the wireless or in the computer lab), download the W Poem grouping cards (file 1) to assign students specific tasks.

Reteach: To be determined by the teacher based on student needs
|
Extension: Make copies of student poems and pass them out. Using a highlighter, students can highlight each of the 5 "W" questions a different color.
Make copies of the student poems. Cut each line apart and create new poems. (This is a great writing center extension. Put strips into a basket and have the students choose a new who, what, when, where, and why. Students can then compose the new poem.)
|
Guiding Questions: How was writing the poem different than other writing you have done?
What type of words do we think of when we ask "who"? (naming words or nouns)
Which type of words tells us "what"? (action words or verbs)
|
Summary Questions: What questions do we ask in a five W poem?
How did you think of an idea for your poem?
What was difficult about writing a poem?
What was easier about poetry writing?
