Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): As a whole group, have the students determine how many different combinations of double scoop cones they could create with 3 flavors of ice cream. |
Lesson: Step 1: Create a folder on the Student Shared directory titled Ice Cream Shop.
Step 2: Save the templates (file 1 and file 2) to the Student Shared directory for students to
access.
Step 3: The students should open the MS Word template called double_dipping1 template (file 1) saved in the Ice Cream
Shop folder.
Step 4: Read through and discuss the task and directions on the MS Word template called double_dipping1.
Step 5: Have the students create and fill in their table.
Step 6: Have the students answer the questions at the bottom of the page.
Step 7: Have the students save the MS Word template called double_dipping1 in their own directory.
Step 8: Open the Publisher template called ice_cream_shop (file 2) from the folder you saved it in.
Step 9: Students use the directions in each box to create a brochure for their own ice cream
store. (To change the pictures, all students have to do is double click on the current picture, and the clip art menu will open.)

Reteach: To be determined by the teacher based on the student needs
|
Extension: How many combinations could you make if you had 9 flavors?
How many combinations could you make if you had 2 different kinds of cones?
|
Guiding Questions: What strategy are you using to determine all of the combinations?
Are you satisfied with your strategy? Why?
How might you organize your results to look for patterns that could help you solve another problem like this one?
|
Summary Questions: Do you think you found all of the possible combinations?
If so, how did you know when you had found all the cones?
What if we expanded to 8 flavors? How many different double-dip cones could we make?
What if we didn't count two of the same flavor, like chocolate-chocolate, as a double dip cone? How many combinations would there be?
