Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Before going to the lab, practice reading the rhymes: Hickory, Dickory, Dock and Rain, Rain, Go Away. |
Lesson: Step 1: Save the Excel template called frequency_words1.xls (file 1) to the Student Shared directory for students to access.
Step 2: The students should open the Excel template frequency_words (file 1).
Step 3: Read through the rhyme with the students.
Step 4: Using the letter x, show how you can keep track of the number of times Hickory is used in the rhyme.
Step 5: Show the students how they can add the next word (Dickory).
Step 6: Have students continue to fill in the chart as they read through the rhyme. Point out that if a word appears again, they can add another x in the tally column.
Step 7: Add up and post the number of times each word appears in the rhyme.
Step 8: Add all of the tally marks.
Step 9: Discuss the graph and have students answer the questions.
|
Reteach: To be determined by the teacher based on the student needs
|
Extension: Using the Word Wall Words worksheet in the Excel document, the students pick a determined number of word wall words and fill in the column titled "Word". Then, working with a partner, have the students read a book and record the number of times they see their word wall words.
|
Guiding Questions: If a word appears more than once, do I need to add it again to my Word column? Why not?
If I have 3 x's in the tally column, how many times would I have read that word?
|
Summary Questions: What would happen to our results if we read the rhyme again and charted our information?
Which words appeared least often?
If we took out all of the words that rhyme, how many total words would we be left with?
