I Can.... ... show different ways to make the same fraction.... show fractions that are less than or greater than another fraction. ... indicate the fractional part of a figure when given the decimal. ... use Excel to show equivalent fractions. |
Assessment(s): Can the students show their understanding of equivalency by shading in each fraction in a different way?
Can the students model a non-example of each fraction?
How does this way of showing equivalent fractions relate to things in every day life?

Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Begin the lesson by using the two internet sites in the classroom to show students the different ways to show equivalent fractions. Then use the Excel lesson and demonstrate the lesson. A student could model the lesson on the TV, and see if they can find an equivalent fraction for each given fraction. |
Lesson: Step 1: Print out the Directions for 4lesson_plan_equiv_fractions.doc Word document (file 1) for step-by-step directions with screenshots for this lesson.Step 2: Demonstrate the lesson on your multimedia computer using your TV, or projector before going to the lab; students will understand the directions more clearly with a visual demonstration. Step 3: Students will open up and save the template, showing_equiv_fractions_4 (file 2) to their directory. Step 4: Have the students work in pairs to find the answers to the different problems on the sheets. Step 5: Students will then work together to prepare their own problem and once complete, switch computers for other students to try and solve.

Reteach: To be determined by teacher based on student needs
|
Extension: For an extension activity, students can design several sheets with different fractions and decimals. They can then switch computers with other students to solve one another's equivalent fraction or decimals.
|
Guiding Questions: How would you show a decimal and then convert it to a fraction? How many ways can you show one fraction when you use the same grid picture? Can you think of non-examples?
|
Summary Questions: Can you explain what your thinking was when you set up your own equivalent fraction/decimal sheet? In what ways did this help you understand equivalent fractions? In what ways did this help you understand how decimals relate to fractions?
