Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Read aloud one of the books suggested under Supplementary Resources. Have the students listen for examples of figurative language. After reading the book, have the class brainstorm the uses of figurative language they heard in the story. |
Lesson: Step 1: Show the students the idioms_practice PowerPoint (file 1) using your mutlimedia and TV connection. As a class, complete the quiz in Slide Show view. This will be a good review of figurative language. Discuss as a class why we use figurative language and how it enriches our communication. Explain that for this lesson, the class will be focusing on using similes to write poems. Then click on the POEM in the PowerPoint.Step 2: As a class, discuss the poem Predictable by Bruce Lansky. Have the students decide if he chose strong words for the similes he used. Discuss how the similes enriched the communication of ideas. Step 3: Save the Clever PowerPoint template (file 2) to the student server. Step 4: In the lab, have the students open the Clever PowerPoint template (file 2) and complete the poem on their own using similes. Step 5: Once they fill in the words, they can add appropriate clip art. Step 6: Have them view their poem in Slide Show view. When they get to slide 6, they can click on the link and do the Idiom Online activity for reinforcement of figurative language.
