Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Introduce idioms by reading some books that include idioms. Some examples are Chocolate Moose for Dinner by Fred Gwynne or Monkey Business by Wallace Edwards. The website, ReadWriteThink has some great activities for idioms. |
Lesson: Introduce idioms and explore new idioms by looking at the Dictionary of Idioms by Scholastic. Then have the students complete the Publisher brochure (File 1).
Step 1: Save the 5th_la_idioms(File 1) to the student shared directory.
Step 2: Model how to use the template, such as switching between pages, typing in text, replacing clip-art, etc. Step 3: Allow the students to complete the template. Step 4: Have the students print their document when they are finished.

Extension: Have the students share their brochure by pairing up with a third or fourth grade classroom and sharing what they have learned about idioms.
