Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Prior to the lesson, coordinate with another class to become penpals with your students. Ask the students what kinds of things they would like to know about their penpals. Model the recording and organization of these ideas in Kidspiration. Take students to the lab and have them open Kidspiration and brainstorm some of the things that they would like to ask their penpal. Print for use in the next lesson on letter writing. |
Lesson: Open up the Kidspiration web from the lesson before. Model the process of letter writing using the organizational web and the Kidspiration "penpal_letter" template (file 1). Take the students to the lab and open the Kidspiration "penpal letter" template (file 1). Have the student begin filling in the parts of a letter while referring to the organizational web. When finished, have the students publish their letter by clicking on the Publish icon (the green arrow pointing to the sheet of paper) in the menu. This will transfer only their writing, not the prompts in the template, to Microsoft Word. Students may make any final changes in Word and print.
