Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Ask students to name any people or organizations associated with the civil rights movement in America. Ask them if they can name any Texans who fought for civil rights.
Lesson: Distribute Civil Rights Research Project brochure, and go over information, explaining proper procedures for computer use and giving the students an overview of the assignment. Hand out the Texans Struggle for Civil Rights chart. Discuss the NEISD web content evaluation chart and have these available for students who choose to locate their own sites not on the hotlist. Assign computer numbers to students, then go to the lab (or distribute laptops). The links below should be placed in a hotlist for students to access in the student shared drive.
Reteach: Help individual students locate information and fill out one square on the chart.
Extension: Have faster students find one more person and organization to research and add to the chart.
For all students, have them create a powerpoint presentation using the information on their charts.
Guiding Questions: Who were the key figures and organizations involved in the struggle for civil rights in Texas, and what were their significant contributions to the movement?
Summary Questions: What are 5 important facts about each of the people/organizations listed on the chart, and why is each significant?
