Unit/Lesson Overview: Teacher will introduce lesson using the Number Word, Numeral, Number Set Breeze presentation. Students call out the number of items, the numeral, or the number word shown on each slide.
Teacher will read Ten Black Dots by Donald Crew.
Students will use KidPix to demonstrate their knowledge of number words, numerals, and number sets. (An example of the activity is available under Supplementary Resources (file 1)
Students will use KidPix to write and illustrate the sentence: Number of black dots can make a blank. (An example of the activity is available under Supplementary Resources (file 2)

Introductory Activity (Warm-Up): Anticipatory Set - Teacher will use the Number Word, Numeral,, and Number Set Breeze presentation. |
Lesson: Prior to the class session: Make 3 sets of note cards...one set with number words, one set with numerals, and one with number sets (from 1-10). Take one card from each set and make random groups of 3 to be used with the KidPix number word, numeral, number set activity. Each group of 3 cards should have a numeral card, a number word card and a number set card.
Launch Internet Explorer and go to the following URL: http://breeze.neisd.net/number/ (also found in Internet Links)
Students will watch the Number Word, Numeral, Number Set Breeze presentation. Have the students call out the number of items that are shown, the numeral or the number word. Not all slides need to be shown. (The Breeze presentation MUST be viewed in Internet Explorer.)
Computer lab or computer station activity: View the KidPix (file 1) example first. Pass out the set of 3 different note cards (1 numeral card, 1 number word card, and 1 number set card) to each student. Student will demonstrate their knowledge of numerals, number words, number sets using KidPix. Show students the KidPix (file 1) example of the completed activity. Student will use the text tool to write the number and type the number word and use the stamp tool to stamp the number set for each of their 3 cards. Student will complete and print product to be used for assessment.
Computer lab or computer station activity: What can your dots make? Using the classroom multimedia computer go to the following URL:
Ten Black Dots Discuss what different number of dots could make.
Students will use KidPix to write and illustrate their sentence: 3 black dots can make a plane. Pass out either a note card with a numeral, number word or number set to each student (differentiate as needed). Student will use the number on their card to write and illustrate their sentence.

Extension: The students can work with a partner to create their own set of number word, numeral, and number set cards. Use cards to play a memory game with the cards facing down.
